I was deeply impressed when I heard this melodic, peaceful music for the first time. Eiko was sitting at her piano, playing pieces by Joe Hisaishi and Yukie Nishimura – both artists are greatly admired in Japan. “I must turn this into a multimedia project”, immediately sprang to mind and I was happy when I discovered Eiko found the idea to be just as exciting as I did.

As a producer and musician I appreciate and admire Eiko for her remarkable pianistic talent and, in turn, I was able to convince my record company about the idea: a CD full of the music written by these two wonderful composers, played by Eiko on a Yamaha grand, accompanied by a photo book with artistically-inspired photos capturing the rich wealth of Japan’s different facets.

We were extremely pleased when Yamaha Hamburg put an S6 grand piano at our disposal for the production and recording could start at Hamburg’s renowned Chameleon Studio. The analogue, stereo surround 24 track recordings were subsequently digitalised and processed in Membran Studio.

Then began my Japan adventure. I had a whole month to travel the length and breadth of this fascinating country, photographing its beauty. My search for light and shade, colours and forms was exciting but demanded the utmost in patience and perseverance. Similar to my work as a musician, this was all about creating compositions – in this case, with colours, shadows and forms that I had to balance out with great care in order to produce soft, rhythmic or dramatic effects.

This was my second journey to Japan and I was grateful for the chance to delve deeper into the impressive Japanese culture; on the one hand, Japan is one of the leading countries in the world when it comes to technology – on the other, the country has managed to maintain its delicate facets, high moral standards, a deferential treatment of people, and a sense of simplicity and beauty.

Many of my photos would not exist without the help of loveable Eiko, her family and friends. Their friendliness and kindliness helped me gain admission to temples, maiko houses and other special places I would otherwise have not become acquainted with.
